Royal Port Alfed Golf Club Promotion

April Golf Special at MyPond Hotel

In 1923 a visitor described the course as “A monument to the origins of golf played on a South African links next to a southern sea” Not much has changed since then.
The undulating course snakes its way through thickets of pristine coastal forest and over hilly dunes always with the smell and sounds of the Indian Ocean close by whose blue waters offer the most panoramic views from many of the fairways. In true links tradition every slope, mound and dip remains untouched, demanding creative shot making and deft reading of angles.

The course is fairly short at 5739 (ladies 5025) meters and on windless days can be vulnerable. However days such as these are rare and you are more likely than not to encounter the dominant westerly or less common easterly blowing up and down the coast. On one day you will be able to hit a little wedge to the short 11th, Punch Bowl but the next you will need a one wood.

A favourite with members and visitors alike is the par 4 12th, “Greenmantle” where the views of the ocean from the back markers are superb. So taken with the view in 1925 the Prince of Wales attempted to drive a ball directly from here into the sea. The ball was recovered and is on display at the Club House.
Adding to the allure and charm of the course is its resident wild life. Normally shy Bushbuck will continue grazing contently as you walk by while Springbok and Impala pronk with delight. The Blesbok, fallow deer Duiker and Giant Tortoise peer at the golfers with suspicion and there is bird life in abundance.

Port Alfred Attractions

A town perfect for your summer holidays: Port Alfred! Situated in the Eastern Cape, our small town is brimming with joyful vibes. There are so many fun things for you and your family to do while you stay at MyPond Hotel. Let us give you a brief tour…

THE BEACH
Divided into East and West Beach by the tamed Kowie River. The East Beach (same side as the school) is idyllic for the avid surfer with waves formed perfectly by the reefs. And if you brought your dogs with you on vacation, this is one of the best places to take them for long uninterrupted walks, with fewest restrictions. Not recommended for swimming. The West Beach is more for the regular tourist, with a few restaurants and a café near the pier, ideal for ice-creams or sundowners or both (you’re on holiday, relax). The Beaches on this side here have lifeguards in chosen spots, look out for the swimming chart for safety please (near the cafe parking lot). The are multiple little spots along the beach road where you can stop and go for a brisk stroll. Remember an umbrella, water, flip-flops and sunscreen!

GOLF
For the more relaxed sporty tourist, we have an 18 hole golf course speckled with Springbok (for real!) Is it a nature reserve or golf course or cheap lawn maintenance? You decide! Everyone is welcome to come play a few rounds here, clubs/sticks are available to rent.

GAME RESERVES
There are so many to choose from in the nearby area, so we aren’t going to name names here (ask at the reception for some flyers, we do like to promote the locals). Lions, Zebra, Rhino, Elephants, Dung Beetles, Warthogs, Meerkats (It is the Lion King country after all), Giraffe, and of course birds galore.

THE KOWIE RIVER
Whether you are a wild one and enjoy skiing or a romantic and prefer rowboats, this river is big enough and long enough, for all of you.  Plus all water transport is available for hire at Kiddies Beach (which we forgot to mention earlier, this is ideal for children as there is a safety net to keep sharks out, tiny waves if you can call them that and the water level never rises higher than 1.5 metres.)

MYPOND HOTEL
Best of all is the 4 star accommodation that we offer, we actually won the award for  best 4 star hotel in the Eastern Cape this year (Lilizela)! Our rooms are spacious, our staff friendly, our in-house restaurant offers superb indoor and outdoor cuisine (including room service) and we are situated besides the river. You couldn’t ask for anything more this holiday.

Trust us, your stay will be blissful.
